How have momentous changes in information technology impacted intelligence work over the past two decades? That’s the question Chief Intelligence Officer Jon Sather sat down to discuss for the second installment of “20 Ways the World Has Changed in 20 Years," a podcast series celebrating Stratfor’s 20th anniversary.

Sather named five key technological shifts in the world of intelligence work:

  • Cyber attacks and threats
  • The importance of encryption
  • The rise of social media
  • New forms of surveillance technology – now available to anyone who owns a smart phone
  • Vast improvements in imagery intelligence (or IMINT), including satellite imagery available to the general public

Discover Stratfor's latest satellite imagery and analysis.

A recurring question throughout the discussion is how to manage and use Big Data, an ongoing challenge for intelligence professionals and others around the world.

The “20 Ways the World Has Changed in 20 Years” series kicked off in February with a podcast featuring Stratfor Vice President of Intelligence Fred Burton on “Five Ways the World Has Changed Since 9/11.” Throughout 2016, Strafor will reflect back on the unique insights we have shared over the years, look ahead to the next 20 years and celebrate our readers who value an expansive, unbiased perspective on world affairs.
